How do you develop music creating software like Reason and Fruityloops?

Tuesday, May 15th, 2012

Question by Black Mekca: How do you develop music creating software like Reason and Fruityloops?
Hello,

I want to create a music software that visually displays the sound of music like Propellerheads Reason, FL Studio (fruityloops), and many more. I am wondering:

-how should I get started?
-What program do I use to write visualizers?
-what code language should I use to develop the software?
-how do i make the visuals of my software match the rhythm of a song?
-How to create the graphics and the algorithm’s for various instruments (virtual)?
-What is this best school or training program in the US?

If you can help me out in this matter that would be greatly appreciated.

Excuse my English its a second language and I do my best, my errors are unintentional if offended.

There is no off the shelf package that has the ‘engine’ already laid out. It would be done in C++ and would be a LOT of code. Why don’t you start with something a bit simpler like writing some code for VST ‘plug -ins’ or Direct X ‘plug-ins?
These are a seperate program people buy for their recording/ writing software (cubase, sonar, digidesign pro tools, etc…) and they provide functions that are basically the same as a ‘rack mounted’ piece of hardware in a studio, Ex: Reverb or Delay, Chorus, Pre-Amp, Processors these are used AFTER the recording has been done to ‘polish’ vocals, guitars, drums etc… and make them sound professional, not like a home recording. It used to be there was only the hardware (rack) gear. Now people are using ‘duplicates/clones’ of the former hardware they used but as a software ‘plug in’. If you want to write a LOT less code, and have a chance of making a LOT of money selling them, write code for VST plug ins, Direct X p.ins. or TDM based p. ins. The key here is how good the plug in works, and believe me when I tell you there is a LOT of money being made and a lot of competition.

Question by Warren G: which music making software is better?
Reason 4 (http://www.propellerheads.se/products/reason/index.cfm?fuseaction=get_article&article=what-is-it)
…or…
FL Studio (http://flstudio.image-line.com/)

Any other programs you would suggest? I am about to purchase one so any recommendations or reviews on the versatility of these programs would be much appreciated

I use Reason now but use to use FL.
FL is so easy to get the hang off. Stock sounds are not all the good. Will have to do some tweaking. You can use VST’s though
Reason is a little harder but the stock sounds are good. Making you own instruments is also fun. Can use VST’s though.
Learn to Rewire and use both if you have the funds. Get the demo for both try them out. Good Luck.

Which music notation software best fits someone writing music for a small band (attention Finale users)?

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

Question by Brett M: Which music notation software best fits someone writing music for a small band (attention Finale users)?
I’ve been a musician for about 12 years now, and lately I’ve been getting requests for sheet music for some of my work. It’s embarrassing to say that I don’t have software capable of printing professional sheet music.

Years ago, I used Noteworthy Composer (www.noteworthysoftware.com) because I was just starting out. It’s become more of a professional thing since, and Noteworthy is nowhere near as complex and diverse as Finale or Sibelius. I feel like I’m using Notepad when there are programs like Microsoft Word.

Finale is amazing after trying the demo so far, but I’m worried that I’m spending too much for what I’d actually use it for. I don’t need the fancy orchestral instruments (I already have Propellerheads’ Reason), and I’m only writing sheets for the piano part, possibly drums, guitars, and strings. Are there still reasons why Finale would be the best choice? I’m wondering what current Finale users have to say about the product. Is it worth the money?

Being a student, I can get the academic version of Finale 2010 for $ 220, but I’m wondering if there is any other software that will simply let me write sheet music with a professional style at a better price.

Forget it. You cant move or burn an installed program from your pc. You would need the installer files which arent there anymore. If he downloaded and saved the installer, copy it and run in on your pc, if it came on disk, you need the disk

If I’m buying a laptop and need to use recording software like Reason 4, for under $1000, what should I get?

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

Question by Hal: If I’m buying a laptop and need to use recording software like Reason 4, for under 00, what should I get?
I need a laptop for under $ 1000, and hopefully under $ 900 as well. I think it might take some real hunting or maybe even be impossible to do this, but if there was such a laptop that could easily handle software like Propellerhead’s Reason 4 that anyone knows, I would really appreciate the help.
I need it to be a PC

Hi Hal,

Office Max has laptops on sale right now. You can get an HP G-60-4420 for around $ 600. That comes with a Intel Pentium T4300 chip, Windows Vista Home Premium (64 bit), 4Gigs of RAM, a 320 Gig hard drive and the motherboard is 64bit. That should do you just fine. Plus, it has a number of other feature. I just bought one and I am happy with it. Check it out.
